Introduction
Drillster is committed to conducting business responsibly and sustainably. As a provider of adaptive learning technology, we believe that long-term business success is inseparable from our responsibility towards people, society and the environment. This report outlines our commitments and practices in the areas of employee well-being, diversity and inclusion, environmental responsibility, sustainable procurement, responsible travel and community impact.
About Drillster
Headquartered in Utrecht, the Netherlands, Drillster develops adaptive learning technology that helps organizations develop, anchor and retain critical skills more effectively. Traditional training is often a one-time event, after which acquired knowledge and skills gradually fade due to the forgetting curve. Drillster is an adaptive learning platform that combines technology with neuroscience to help competencies stick, enabling sustainable skills development and sustainable on-the-job performance.
Workplace and employee well-being
Drillster promotes a healthy, safe and inclusive working environment. Employees benefit from flexible working arrangements, sit-stand desks, collaborative workspaces and continuous professional development. We emphasize outcome-based performance, regular coaching and open communication rather than traditional annual reviews.
Our office is located in a highly accessible area that supports commuting by public transport and bicycle. Hybrid working arrangements reduce commuting-related emissions while providing employees with flexibility and a healthy work-life balance. We offer an employee bicycle benefit plan to encourage taking the bike to work. Local sales offices in the USA, France and Spain ensure that customer visits can be done locally and do not require international travel. There are rules as to when and how we travel to international customers or events.
Drillster has a Code of Conduct that all employees adhere to. The Drillster code of conduct aims to make sure everybody respects the joint aim of creating a safe work place, respect the environment and interact ethically with our stakeholders (customers, suppliers, shareholders, etc.).
Enforcement of policies and good conduct is done via the employee contracts, via a handbook personnel and the Drillster code of conduct. Drillster uses its own adaptive learning app to develop, anchor and retain the knowledge, awareness and skills on the code of conduct. Employees are also aware of the consequences of not respecting the code.
Diversity, equity and inclusion
Drillster is committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels respected and valued. Our workforce represents multiple nationalities and backgrounds. Our Code of Conduct and DEI learning programs help ensure continuous awareness of inclusive behaviour, equal opportunities and respectful collaboration. As we have over 10 nationalities in our company, the common language is English.
A confidence councilor has been appointed and this person has been trained for this role.
Anti-bribery and anti-corruption
At Drillster, we are committed to conducting business with integrity, transparency and fairness. We maintain a zero-tolerance approach to bribery, corruption, fraud and any form of improper business conduct.
Employees, directors, contractors and business partners are expected to comply with all applicable anti-bribery and anti-corruption laws and regulations in the countries where we operate. No employee may offer, promise, authorize, request or accept bribes, kickbacks or any other improper advantage to obtain or retain business or secure an unfair benefit.
Business decisions are made on the basis of merit, quality, value and compliance with ethical standards. We expect the same high standards from our suppliers, partners and representatives.
To support this commitment, Drillster:
- Operates under a Code of Conduct that promotes ethical business behaviour.
- Maintains transparent contracting and procurement processes.
- Evaluates suppliers and partners on integrity, compliance and responsible business practices.
- Encourages employees to raise concerns about unethical behaviour without fear of retaliation.
- Regularly reviews its policies and practices to ensure continued compliance and ethical conduct.
By embedding integrity into our daily operations, we aim to build long-term trust with our employees, customers, partners and stakeholders.
Supplier and business partner policy
Drillster seeks to work with suppliers and business partners that share our commitment to ethical business practices, respect for human rights and environmental responsibility.
We expect our suppliers and partners to:
- Comply with applicable laws and regulations.
- Prohibit child labour, forced labour and any form of modern slavery.
- Provide a safe and healthy working environment.
- Treat employees fairly and without discrimination.
- Conduct business with integrity and avoid bribery and corruption.
- Minimize their environmental impact where reasonably possible.
Where concerns arise regarding unethical conduct, human rights violations or environmental misconduct, Drillster reserves the right to review the relationship and take appropriate action.
Environmental responsibility
Drillster’s adaptive learning methodology contributes to sustainability by reducing unnecessary retraining and learning inefficiencies. By helping learners retain knowledge longer through spaced repetition and personalized learning, organizations can reduce time, energy and resources spent on repeated classroom training and travel-intensive learning activities.
Sustainable procurement and vendor selection
When selecting suppliers and partners, Drillster considers not only quality, security and cost, but also sustainability-related factors. Preference is given to vendors that demonstrate responsible environmental and social practices. Evaluation criteria may include: environmental management policies, carbon-reduction initiatives, ethical business conduct, diversity and inclusion practices, compliance certifications (such as ISO 27001 where applicable), data privacy standards, and commitment to responsible supply chains. We actively encourage suppliers to share our commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement.
As a technical provider of smart learning technology, we have two main elements in which we can contribute to a greener world”
- The data centers that we use to host the Drillster app
- The travel movements of our international workforce
This has resulted in the Drillster responsible travel policy and the sustainable technology and hosting policy
Responsible travel policy
Drillster aims to minimize the environmental impact of business travel. Employees are encouraged:
- To use virtual meetings whenever practical.
- When travel is required, public transport is preferred for short and medium-distance journeys.
- Air travel is limited to situations where it is operationally necessary, such as supporting international customers and partners. Drillster has sales offices in the USA, France and Spain to ensure that travel distance to customers is limited.
- Travel planning considers the environmental impact of available transport options, and trips are combined whenever possible to reduce emissions.
- Hybrid working and remote collaboration further contribute to reducing our overall carbon footprint.
Sustainable technology and hosting policy
We realize that the hosting of the Drillster application causes a CO2 footprint. Objective is that:
- The data center hosting company has a zero carbon footprint objective
- The data center hosting company is a top 3 player when it comes to renewable energy and carbon-free energy initiatives.
Drillster hosts its European platform on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). By leveraging a leading hyperscale cloud provider, Drillster benefits from highly efficient data center operations that generally consume less energy per computing workload than traditional on-premises infrastructure.
Google has committed to achieving net-zero emissions across its operations and value chain by 2030 and aims to operate all of its data centers and offices on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. Google also provides transparency regarding the carbon footprint of cloud services and continuously invests in renewable energy projects and energy-efficient infrastructure.
Independent assessments consistently rank Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services among the most sustainable large-scale cloud providers. Google is often recognized as a leader in renewable energy procurement and carbon-free energy initiatives. However, like all major cloud providers, Google Cloud's operations still generate greenhouse gas emissions, particularly through construction of data centers, hardware manufacturing, supply chains and periods when carbon-free energy is not available.
By hosting its services on Google Cloud Platform, Drillster seeks to minimize the environmental impact of its digital operations while benefiting from ongoing improvements in energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption within the cloud industry.
Community impact
Drillster supports educational and societal initiatives that contribute to knowledge sharing and sustainable development. Examples include providing support to educational institutions and offering free access to selected organizations that promote awareness of sustainability and societal progress.
One of these organization is The Shifters, a French organization that raises public knowledge and awareness on climate change and the actions that can be taken to stop climate change. Thousands of volunteers are trained permanently using the Drillster adaptive learning app.
Continuous improvement
CSR is an ongoing journey. Drillster periodically reviews its policies, supplier relationships, travel practices and environmental impact to identify opportunities for improvement. We remain committed to transparency, responsible growth and creating long-term value for our employees, customers, partners and society.
