More than two in five organisations in critical sectors hire people without the right diplomas
Forty-five percent of employees in critical occupations feel their employer should devote more attention to keeping knowledge up to date on the job. That is one of the findings from research by Drillster (opens in new tab), the adaptive learning specialist, among more than 1,000 employees with a critical role. Think of professions in sectors such as healthcare, education, or public transport.
A quarter (25%) of employees say their employer falls short when it comes to the budget available for further training, for example to cover changes in protocols and legislation. The same proportion believes their employer communicates inadequately about these kinds of changes within their field.
New hires lack sufficient training
Seven out of ten organisations in critical sectors (71%) check whether new hires hold the right certificates and diplomas. Even so, more than two in five (42%) admit they onboard people who lack the required credentials. In half (50%) of those cases, new employees follow an accelerated training path. Others proceed at a regular pace—or receive no training at all.
Marco van Sterkenburg, CEO at Drillster, explains: “Employees in critical sectors feel they do not receive enough support from their employer to stay skilled through ongoing training. That is a shocking outcome. Employers are responsible for deploying properly qualified staff, in terms of both formal authority and demonstrable competence. Because a diploma or certificate earned in the past does not guarantee sustained proficiency, organisations must make sure that employees refresh their knowledge in time and keep it at the desired level. Facilitating the right learning and development programmes is therefore a key task for employers. That is how you secure qualified and competent staff. It is crucial, because the roles in these sectors are essential to society.”
