What’s new in Drillster Question Crafter?

Drillster released a new version of the Drillster Question Crafter, our AI interface that allows organizations to create high-quality adaptive learning content in just a few minutes. New functionality and enhancements help you create richer learning experiences:

• Story Crafter creates short Stories that convey information and give learners a reason to engage with a drill (assessment-based, adaptive learning exercise).
• Improved learning element analysis identifies what learners need to recall, understand or apply.
• Better questions use clearer language, more convincing incorrect answer options and more natural question equivalents.
• AI-evaluated open-ended answers check whether a learner’s answer expresses the right idea, even if they use different words or make a typo.
• Enhanced language support takes local language preferences into account for new content and translations.
• Upgrade of the AI model improves the Question Crafter’s ability to process long, complex documents.

Here’s what each enhancement means in practice.

The Drillster Story Crafter

The new Story Crafter helps authors to create a Story with the help of generative AI. A Story can transmit information, introduce a situation or show how the subject connects to someone’s work. It gives learners context, relevance and basic information before they begin practising in a drill.

Enhanced critical learning elements analysis

When you upload a document, the Question Crafter identifies the key learning elements that the learner should know, be aware of, or master. In the updated version, the analysis is more refined and aligned with the cognitive level you select: recall, understand or apply.

In many cases, two or three learning elements in the understand phase can roll up to one learning element in the apply phase, or vice versa. The enhanced learning element analysis refines this which has a positive impact on the quality of the content.

Plainer language, better distractors and stronger equivalent questions

We’ve improved how Question Crafter writes questions. The language is plainer and more natural while remaining professional and warm. Questions can be short or detailed depending on what the situation calls for.

In the new version, incorrect answer options, also known as distractors, are less obvious. That makes a multiple-choice question more useful: learners need to consider the options instead of spotting an answer that clearly does not belong.

The Drillster Question Crafter now also creates more natural equivalent questions. This lets learners practise the same learning element in different ways, resulting in a stronger and more durable learning impact.

An AI arbiter for open-ended answers

A learner may understand the right approach without using exactly the words in a model answer. The new AI arbiter evaluates open-ended responses by meaning, taking synonyms and typos into account.

This is especially useful when learners describe an action, a decision or an approach in their own words. They can show what they understand without having to reproduce one exact phrase.

Language that fits your audience

Words, spelling and formats can vary between regions, even when people speak the same language. Question Crafter now makes better use of local language preferences or dialects. If the Drillster Question Crafter detects that a source document uses Spanish from Mexico or Argentina, it will use that flavour of the Spanish language for the creation of content. Also, the Question Crafter will adapt the amount format to the specific country ($1,000 for the US, €1.000 for the Netherlands, 1 000 € for France, etc.).

As with any AI-generated learning content, authors can review the result and refine the wording before publishing.

Upgrade to the Gemini 3.6 Flash LLM model

The Drillster Question Crafter now uses Gemini 3.6 Flash as its underlying AI model. This improves its ability to process long, complex documents and turn their contents into a focused starting point for learning content. The new model is faster, has better reasoning and fewer hallucinations.

Create learning that goes beyond the source document
